maybe Kobe read this blog and finally realized what I said is true - he will NEVER win a championship with the Laker's and has a better chance of winning the lottery than getting traded before his contract is up.

I love one of the headlines from today

"BUSS promises Bryant he will improve the team"

It isn't that easy - he might mean it but it won't happen.

Ed,

I appreciate what you are saying and you make a good point. I still believe one of the main problems is when Kobe is being shut down don't take 26 shots! Pass the ball get more people involved.

He doesn't do that and the team suffers. Kobe is a very intelligent person he knows when he will be off or the other team will shut him down. It wouldn't surprise me if he knew that in the 1st 5 minutes of a game.

It clearly doesn't take 26 shots to figure that out. In addition to shooting 27% that day he had only 5 assists which by the way is below his season's average.

The only way this team gets better if Kobe gets people involved and involved early in the game. They would be a much better team if he averaged 10 assists a game or somehow made sure every starter scored at least 4 points in the 1st 8 minutes of the game.

Merrill take a look at last night's game. At home against the Grizzlies (17-54) these "solid players" blew a 15 point lead and lost 88-86. The Grizzlies are the worst team in the league and they were missing their 3 best players (Mike Miller, Chucky Atkins and Damon Stoudamire). While Kobe was being double and tripled teamed all night and held to 23 points, "Superstar" Odom made up the slack with 3 points in 39 minutes. Yes, Odom had a "double double" (16 rebounds, 11 assists), but as the stats show he lacks the instinct to take over when Kobe is being shut down. The Laker Championship teams have always been built around two to three star players (Jim Pollard & George Mikan; West, Goodrich & Chamberlain; Magic, Worthy & Jabbar;Kobe & Shaq). Kobe cannot do it alone and last night's game proved it.

Ed,

You know that I respect you a ton but I disagree with you in fact I totally disagree.

I don't consider Kevin Garnett, Vince Carter or Ron Artest role players - they are superstars but even if he did open up his pocketbook it won't make a difference because:

1. Kobe doesn't make players around him better
2. I believe he is very selfish and is really into personal stats and his place in the history of the game

For the record the Lakers have the 4th highest payroll in the NBA. They are behind the Knicks, Mavs and 76ers. Clearly Dr. Buss has opened up his wallet but probably given the cash to the wrong guys.

I believe they have some solid players and many consider Lamar Odom a superstar - did you know he is 27th in the league in double double in only 44 games. Is he didn't get hurt he would be in the top 10 for sure.

I look forward to your response.

Kobe will never win another championship if the cast around him doesn't change significantly for the better. We can all name three great players on the Mavs, Spurs, and Suns. Until you can do the same for the Lakers, they'll never make it out of the West.

I don't know about it being fiction. Since the winter of 2005 Kobe has been playing at level that few will ever reach. The problem is not the player, but the owner. Dr. Buss refuses to go out and get the 2 or 3 role players to compliment Kobe and bring a series of rings to Los Angeles. Whether it is a Kevin Garnett, a Vince Carter or a Rod Artest, Buss has put his pocketbook ahead of the championship. The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the “crown jewels” of sport franchises (the Yankees, the Cowboys, the Montreal Canadians, the Celtics, Manchester United, and Real Madrid) who have global of notoriety and substantial brand equity. By not providing the fans the proper player personal to support a gifted athlete who is at the zenith of a hall of fame career taints the team’s elite status and lowers it to that of the Sacramento Kings, the Milwaukee Bucks and/or Houston Rockets. I am reminded of a t-shirt I saw at a minor league game in Columbus, the AAA home of the Yankees. It had the parent team’s logo on it and read “The New York Yankees; We Don’t Rebuilt, We Reload”. Dr. Buss and Company needs to reload this Laker team ASAP and let Kobe take them to the promised land. Anything short would be criminal and a waste of a once in a lifetime player’s skills and abilities.
