Fact or Fiction: The Dallas Mavericks will be NBA Champions this year

This team is awesome! They remind me of the 1985-1986 Celtics. They are great day in and day out. They will 100% win the NBA championship especially since the top three teams are all in the west and finishing as the number one seed means they won’t have to play San Antonio Spurs in a very physical and mentally draining seven game series. An argument could be made that their top eight players rival the greatest teams of all time. They are the only team in NBA history to have three winning streaks of more than twelve games in the same season. The Mavs choked (sorry Mr. Wade) last year and it will not happen this year.  Get ready, Dallas.  There will be a parade come June…FACT!

  1. Bob Graham Says:

Yep, and the MVP of the Mavericks is Mark Cuban who is so passionate about making his team number one, that he is willing to do anything. Hey Mark, since you’ve got more money than God, could you please buy the Bruins and the Celtics.
In the meantime, here’s another fact: If the Mavericks don’t repeat next year, Dallas fans will forget about them. Most fickle fans in the world. Don’t believe me, ask the Cowboys and the Stars. In the meantime, people with no interest in basketball will show up at American Airlines center because it is the place to be seen and will be totally oblivious to the fact that there is a game going on.

  2. Steve Schlesinger Says:

Sorry pal, this will not be the case. I love Cuban’s effort to win the big prize and his team is well equipped, but in the end Phoenix or San Antonio will take them down. And if they don’t get them, some nasty team from the east who knows how to play defensive, throw elbows and get ugly will send them packing. Remember, once we get to the playoffs, offensive takes a back seat to defensive and that is all sports (pitching v. hitting, defensive v. offensive in football, great goaltending in hockey, etc.)

  3. Tony Amador Says:

I have to take exception with both Bob and Steve’s posts…as a Mavs season ticket holder I attend 15-20 regular season games every year plus the playoffs. Dallas can certainly be a fickle sports town but we always love the Cowboys, have supported the Stars consistently since they arrived, and have supported the Mavs with the exception of the 7-10 years they were the worst performing team in professional sports.

And Steve…I’m not sure how many Mavs games you’ve seen this year but this is not the Mavs teams of four years ago — what you’re describing is the Suns. The Mavs are among the top 4-5 in the league in defense along with having a potent offense. This team consistently shuts their opponents down in the fourth quarter to close out games. This team deserves great praise for buying into Avery’s system and playing strong defense when they could easily beat teams with their offense.

The Championship will be the perfect bow on this incredible present of a regular season the Mavs have given us.

    Go Mavs!!

  4. Matt Jordan Says:

I agree the Mavs will win it all this year. But I have a hard time thinking of them as one of the all-time great teams. Maybe they are, but I would like to see at least one championship before comparing them to some of the Lakers, Celtics, and Bulls teams of years past.

  5. Steve Schlesinger Says:

I would like to go back to what I said on your blog and mention, I WAS RIGHT. I did not get a good feeling that they were playoff tough and it was proven. There is something about the playoffs in the NBA – you need to be hot and gritty – they don’t seem that have that grittiness – lots of talent but underachieve in the playoffs. Pass along my condolences to Tony, I know he was very hopeful this year.

  6. Merrill Dubrow Says:

    Steve,

Short and sweet - you were right and I was wrong. Having only been in Dallas for a few years I am NOT the biggest fan in my office but I must admit that I really enjoy the team. The environment at the American Airlines Center (AAC) is great, they do a nice job with the marketing of the game, team and facility and make it fun to watch a game there.

With that said - there are many upsets in sports and this one is clearly at the top of the list for NBA playoff upsets. The Mavs are the better team but didn’t get it done.

Once again you were right and I was wrong.

    Merrill
