While I must admit I was hoping for more from a long lay off from the Soprano’s they were the number 1 cable show for the week with 7.7 million viewers. They outdistanced WWE Raw (which was number 2 & 3) by a significant margin.

I was interested to read that the 7.7 million viewers was much less than the 9.5 million who watched last years opener.

It was the least watched opener since their second season in 2000.

Sounds like someone needs to get “whacked” to increase the ratings!

My husband and I love The Sopranos but actually did not start watching it until its second or third season. We tape it on Sunday nights (since many times we are not available to watch it at 9pm) But then, we can look forward to it during the week and we set aside uninterrupted time. We can also “rewind” and watch things over again so we don’t miss a thing and can watch those moments that are worth repeat viewing — or if I need to FF (that happens on occasion, too)!

Anyway, I always enjoy Stevie Van Zandt … having gone from musician w/ Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band to The Sopranos! Nice transition. Hardly something one would expect but great at both jobs!

We did not have a chance to see the season opener last night (but our DVR has been programmed for every Sunday night for the next 9 weeks. I always have to be so careful when listening to the radio on Monday mornings that they don’t blow it for me by discussing the previous night’s epsiode (whcih they usually do). Fortunately, they started give you an alert so you can turn down the sound.

And if you never watched Six Feet Under .. try that too (it is in reruns now). I really recommend it … totally different than The Sopranos but fantastic and addictive.

Ah, THE SPORANOS. I’m also a fan. My favorite characters are Tony (I admire the way he always tries-and succeeds- in keeping it together) and Uncle Junior (sad to see him slip off into dimensia). (I’m pretty fond of Willow, too, for reasons I won’t go inot here…).
I’m an even bigger fan of the great show that follows THE SPORANOS, ENTOURAGE which I find funny as hell. I like all of the major characters for different reasons (except that I despise Turtle’s infinite ensemble of Yankee hats) as well as the minor characters who drift in and out. To paraphrase one of the show’s characters: “What if I could tell you about a show about four guys who live in Hollywood who always seem to be on the brink of something big, but manage to screw it up and still remain close friends? They have an agent who is off the wall and would literally do anything for his clients. Every role is perfectly cast and the show is laugh-out-loud funny and the half-hour flies by. Would you be interested in that?”

Now you’ve hit on a topic I am truly passionate about. This show is why we have HBO (but Six Feet Under and Entourage justified keeping the channel during Sopranos hiatus).

Now that Sopranos is back, I’ll be living for Sunday night again. I retreat to the TV in the bedroom and lock the door so I won’t be disturbed. Don’t call, I won’t answer.

Next to Tony, I love Carmella best. But I even love the characters I hate -Janice the most, I guess, and Ralph, while he was around. Loved when Silvio had to run the business while Tony was recovering last season.

The characters are so real and the writing so complex. Monday mornings I’m usually still mulling it over and finding hidden meaning, inside jokes, foreshadowing, etc.

Thanks for posting this topic. I’ll look forward to seeing others’ comments.

I recall in the early days being outraged by the show. I thought its depiction of Italians was offensive…the lanuage over the edge…and the cuture of the mob very misguided. It wasnt until I considered the source - HBO - their cornerstone of success is based on pushing the envelope. Its the exageration, its the over the top edge that makes HBO so great and this show a must see!! I’m totally disappointed that this is the last season and I’m booked on Sundays @ 8 for the next eight weeks.

We’ll end our Sunday holiday with a family gathering (minus the kids) watching Tony and the gang for the beginning of our final season. My brother is visiting from Michigan and is more excited about watching HBO than he is going to a Texas Rangers game! (HBO is more entertaining!) Ace

I loved Drea de Matteo aka Adriana (Chrissy’s girl friend). Hopefully she will come back in Carmela’s dreams again this season.

I do have to say i am glad the Vito thing is over. I can’t imagine how they are going to end it. Does Tony die, does he go to prison, do they move to Italy??? Does AJ take over the family? Does Meadow take over the family????
