Best Date Movies of All Time
|
Most people enjoy movies and probably find themselves from time to time looking for great date movies. You have the popcorn. The drinks are all set up. The kids are in bed. The house is fairly quiet. It’s time to pop in a movie that both you and your significant other can enjoy. If your house is like mine, the conversation about picking out movies goes something like this: Merrill - What about an action move tonight? Trish - You know I don’t really like action movies. Merrill - Ok…what do you want to watch? Trish - How about A Perfect Man or something like that? Merrill – Not sure I like the title of that one. What about an action movie? This one is really different! And then of course we compromise. Let’s try and build a list of great date movies so the previous conversation doesn’t need to happen. Here are six of my favorites that everyone can enjoy:
What are your favorites? I look forward to hearing your comments. |

For years, one of my favorite movies in this category has been “Heaven Can Wait” (the Warren Beatty version).
My wife and I just saw Steve Carell’s “Dan in Real Life.” I’d say it definitely qualifies.

For a date movie, Sleepless in Seattle is always a good one. You’ve Got Mail was not bad. Recently saw Music and Lyrics with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore. I was not expecting much but I should have known better. Definitely worth the video rent.
Another good date movie, with some decent action, is Great Expectations with Gwenyth Paltro, Ethan Hawke and Robert Dinero. Great twist at the end and Paltro’s character was, I swear, based on my high school girlfriend.

Message in a Bottle. Although I don’t remember much about the movie (if you know what I’m sayin’).

Back when I was an impressionable college student, Zefferilli’s “Romeo and Juliet” was the big date movie.
My daughter Caitie used to have all her suitors was “Fever Pitch” so they’d know what life with a Red Sox fan was like.

I can’t believe no one has mentioned “Something’s Gotta Give”. I laughed like a hyena at this one. Two of the all-time greats were at their best (Keaton and Nicholson).

Add License to Wed to the list. We watched it last night and it was very cute. It stars Robin Williams, mandy Moore and Jim for the show “The Office”
I think I may also have liked it because it appeared to be a reunion of the cast from the hit comedy “The Office”. I think at least 5 cast members were in the movie which was just released to DVD in the last week.

Mrs. Doubtfire!

This might seem a bit odd (imagine that, coming from me) but “Knocked Up” HAS to be added. It is one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen and “knocks” down the gender barrier; it was equally good for men and women. Going back a little further, here are some more considerations: Four Weddings and a Funeral, 9½ Weeks, Terms of Endearment, Forrest Gump, The Notebook and Braveheart.

My wife and I would add:
Holiday
You’ve Got Mail
Some of our favorites on the list already are American President (we can almost say the lines) and Pretty Woman.
