I Need To Add Some Music To My Ipod–Have Any Ideas?
Those of you who have driven with me know that my musical taste is oldies. Some people call it much worse than that but I guess I am old school and still really like Bruce Springsteen, The Doobie Brothers, Eddie Money and yes, Neil Diamond. Ok I need to update my IPOD with some new music. Actually new UP-TO-DATE music. Music that says to people, "Okay he is finally with the times, somewhat cool and I wouldn’t mind borrowing his IPOD." I am hoping you can help me so I don’t have to go to Circuit City, Best Buy or Barnes & Noble and listen to music for hours of new artists.
I usually listen to my IPOD when I am working out so I am looking for some upbeat music–classical music probably wouldn’t work for me.
What’s on your IPOD that is new and you think that I might like?
I REALLY look forward to your comments and suggestions.

There are three sites I use to discover music that suits my tastes.
1. Rhapsody
2. Pandora
3. Live365
They either have a station for you, or allow you to enter the artist(s) you like and then you see what songs are served up to you. The benefit is finding newer artists that are continuing music genres that you like. For example, my obsession is Progressive Rock (Yes, old Genesis, ELP, Kansas, etc.). These sites have alerted me to Spock’s Beard, Transatlantic, Flower Kings, Arena and others.

I could go on…

I would look into Grammy award winning Latin rock group Ozomatli. They are an amazing mix of jazz, funk, latin, swing and rock and are as good a live band as you’ve ever experienced.
Based on your other tastes, some more recent rock acts to look at would be:
Foo Fighters
Breaking Benjamin
Coheed & Cambria (sound a little like Rush)
OK Go (had that cool video with the treadmills recently)
Morcheeba
Robbie Williams
Linkin Park
Incubus
Lostprophets
For working out - there’s a whole genre of electronic music that’s great for motivation on a treadmill. There I would consider:
Deep Dish
Paul Oakenfold
Carl Cox
BT
Sasha & Digweed
Underworld
And, if you want to chill out, there’s a number of artists that come to mind:
Afro Celt Sound System
Solas
Imogen Heap
Marc Broussard
Jack Johnson
Train
Howie Day
James Blunt
Try a few of those and your ipod will become 20 years younger instantly.
Enjoy.

I too am not exactly up with the times, but there is some music I have on my ipod that I use on the treadmill…
Relatively new music…
Black Eyed Peas - Dont phunk with my heart and Pump it
Justin Timberlake Love Stoned
Outcast is great - Hey ya
Toxic - Britney messed up Spears
Then I am sorry to say…I resort to some oldies, but they work for me…
Gonna Make you sweat - C&C music Factory
Rock this Twon - Stray Cats
A little less conversation - Elvis
It’s not unusual - Tom Jones
Down by the lazy river - Osmonds!!

If you go to Myspace.com and on the top navigation bar go to the music option you will be able to look at all types of new up and coming artists. Most artist out today have a site and put up full versions of songs. The site also breaks artist down by genre of music or top rated artist. Best of all you don’t have to be member of myspace to use it.

Tough question, but let me give it a go. With Bruce Springsteen, the Doobie Brothers, Eddie Money and Neil Diamond as your foundation it tells me that you like a well produced, semi-soulful vocal, medium rock sound. Three new releases that come to mind first are:
Elivs Costello & Allen Toussaint - “The River In Reverse”
The Eagles - “Long Road Out Of Eden”
Bob Dylan - “Modern Times”
If you are looking for some good “roots” rock and roll, here are some bands and artists you might of missed on the FM dial during the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s:
Los Lobos
Richard Thompson
Dwight Yoakam (more C&W but he can rock)
Dave Edmunds/Nick Lowe (solo or together)
Graham Parker and the Rumor
Dr. Feelgood
The Pirates
The Count Bishops
The Blasters
My favorite running/weight training music divides into three camps.
1. Power pop/punk/alternative
The Jam
The Clash (mainly the first 2 albums)
The Rezillos
Social Distortion
The Replacements
Liz Phair
The Dandy Warhols
The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Beck
The White Stripes
Fat Boy Slim
PJ Harvey
and many more….
2. Heavy metal (especially for weight training)
Metallica
Soundgarden
Queens Of The Stone Age
Atomic Rooster
3. Techno/electronic music/trip hop (great for running)
Moby
Paul Oakenfold
Chemical Brothers
Prodigy
Groove Armanda
Anything that is on the Slinky label out of Bouremouth, England
And in a league of his own, Neil Young. I am not a big fan of his acoustic work. But I just love when he straps on his electric guitar and has Crazy Horse or Pearl Jam backing him up. “Mirror Ball” and “Ragged Glory” are two workout musts.

I have a whole new level of respect for Ed Sugar.

I find most of the music I listen to from a great radio station in Nashville(100.1). They are independently owned and operated and showcase new talent as well as the latest from the established artists. I have an eclectic mix on my Ipod including:
Paulo Nutini - New Shoes
Ben Harper -
Maroon 5
Van Morisson
Colbie Caillet - Bubbly & Oxygen
Joss Stone for a great Jazzy sound
Lenny Kravitz for R&R
Eric Hutchison -
Rob Thomas
Eagles of course
John Mayer - the best!
Seal
Nelly Furtado
I could go on and on. I too listen while running and having great music lessens the pain!!

So being one of the youngest employees at MARC, this is something that I feel I can help you with. I completely agree with all of the artists that have previously been mentioned. (Especially Jack Johnson and John Mayer). A couple more that are close to the genre of music that you have listed are Stained, Incubus, Chris Daughtry, Eve 6, Boys like Girls, Evanescence, 3 Doors Down, Hinder and The Fray.
Some that are not necessarily in the same genre but would be good to work out to are of course Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown, Fergie, as messed up as her life has been in the public eye recently I heard Brittney Spears’s new CD is good. Timberland is known for producing tons of hits and Kanye West is rap but not normal rap.
Just a few artists I like. Hope this helps.

For newer stuff, I tend to like the Garage Celidgh bands:
The DropKick Murphies
The Saw Doctors
The Elders.
For chiliing, I like to listen to Katie Melua (the “British Nora Jones”) (of course the fact that she’s absolutely gorgeous doesn’t weigh into the equation at all…)

Oh this is fun, where do I begin… I can’t live without music and constantly discover new music… how fun to share or “pay it forward”!
So cool to see that others are reco’ing Paolo Nutini and Ozomati (sp), less well known but so good to listen to. Sadly I discovered Paolo Nutini on one of the “hotel channels” on TV… might even have been in Dallas. Here are some other bands/artists I really like and listen to often on my iPod. I’m Gen X, not a Millennial, so I don’t claim to be “with it” in any way. I’m sure my daughter will quickly tell you, I am not. But I think I have open taste in music.
John Legend (wow)
The Fray
James Blunt
Mat Kearney
James Morrison
Red Hot Chili Peppers (classic… recent stuff still hot - every generation seems to think they “own” this group, even Millennials… and 8-year-olds)
Barenaked Ladies (just plain fun music)
Black Eyed Peas - and Fergie
Bowling for Soup
John Mayer
Maroon Five
Jack Johnson (a few years old, his good stuff)
Plain White T’s
Lifehouse
Sean Kingston
Simple Plan (they also sing the cool “What’s New Scooby Doo” theme song!)
The Wiggles (just kidding)
Willing to tackle any light rap? Then…
Kanye West
Common
Code Red
And that doesn’t even cover my fabulous 80’s collection.
Finally, please don’t buy Britney Spears. Or Celine Dion. I just can’t bear it.

My favorite recent Ipod (full CD) additions include:
-Arcade Fire, Neon Bible
-Byran Ferry, Dylanesque
-Eddie Vedder, Into the Wild Soundtrack
-The National, Boxer
-Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand
-Xavier Rudd, White Moth
December 5th, 2007 at 11:29 am
I am trying hard to expand my horizons and over the last day (courtesy of TA - Thanks) or so I have listened to:
Paolo Nutini
The Kooks
All American Rejects
The Fray
Out of all of them I really like The Fray the best - I need to listen to the other music again before I make up my mind.
But I still love the oldies and last night saw a great show that Billy Joel put on - wow!

You definitely need some Dave Matthews Band to add to this collection!
December 6th, 2007 at 11:12 am
A big thank you to Matt Gershner from E-Rewards for sending me a disk full of music and for being very smart to send instructions on how to download the music to my IPOD!
Thanks Matt!

WOW!!! I am really impressed with the well rounded musical tastes of your reading audience.
I would bring you back into the ’50’s with my taste and perhaps a little ’60’s and 70’s with Neil Diamond and Simon and Garfunkel and John Denver.
The person I suggest you get in contact with is my daughter Janet who is a real afficionado and has well over 5000 songs/albums on her I-pod.

Yeah! You loved The Fray! I am listening to them right now, and I have to say they are among my very favorite bands. Every time I hear one of their songs, anywhere, my daughter says “Mommy, this is your favorite!” and she’s so right. If you like The Fray, you will like several others on my list. Trust me…

Danielle,
Thanks for your comments. I am actually listening to Dave Mathews band (thanks DB) right now. I look forward to checking out some of your other suggestions.
Stacey - wow that’s a long list. One name jumps out at me Alecia Keyes - I was in a LA restaurant with her a few months back and had NO idea who she was.
I NEED TO GET OUT MORE!
Thanks.

Merrill — I think you need to cross the pond and branch out a little, maybe do a little UK, indie, and underground without going too punk or garage.
Here are a few artist/song recs. Some of these artists already mentioned above:
KT Tunstall (Scotland) — “Suddenly I See”
Keane (England) — “Everybody’s Changing”
Joss Stone (England, soul/R&B) — “Tell Me ‘Bout It”
The Thrills (Ireland) — “One Horse Town”
The Kooks (England) — “She Moves in Her Own Way”
Gomez (England) — “See the World”
Also, back on home turf, most definitely get the latest Springsteen album!

OK, so I am a little late to respond here, but I thought I’d share a few tracks from my tried and true running playlist. They’re not all current, but they are great “get moving” songs!
American Idiot - Green Day (pretty much the entire album is good for running)
Baby Got Back - Sir Mix a Lot (hey, when you’re running for hours at a stretch you need some comic relief!)
Brick House - Rick James (ditto)
Go Baby Go - Garbage
Footloose - Kenny Loggins
Hey Ya - Outkast
I Wanna be Sedated - the Ramones
Lose Yourself - Eminem (”Eye of the Tiger” for the younger set!)
Seether - Veruca Salt
Maneater - Nelly Furtado
Volcano Girls - Veruca Salt
Seven Nation Army - White Stripes
Take Me out - Franz Ferdinand
Paralyzed - Finger 11?
