I was traveling to a few cities a few weeks ago and for some reason when I was thinking about the cities, people popped into my mind. An example would be if I am going to NY or someone mentions NY I quickly think of Rudy Giuliani, Mickey Mantle and Donald Trump. Maybe it is odd or maybe lots of people do this.
I actually started to think about this and here are a few cities with names that came to my mind first:
| Boston | - | Ted Williams, the Kennedy Family, James Taylor and Matt Damon |
| Chicago | - | Ernie Banks and Al Capone (please stop laughing) – not 100% sure Al was even born in Chicago |
| Los Angeles | - | Walt Disney and Magic Johnson |
| Philadelphia | - | Ben Franklin, Wilt Chamberlain, Pat Croce |
| San Francisco | - | Robin Williams ( I drove by his house once and I guess it stuck with me) |
Ok now your turn . . .
- Do you associate people with a city?
- Does a person pop into your head when someone mentions a city?
- What do you think of my choices?
I look forward to your comments.

Christine Cook says:
Yes, I do, but I tend to think of people in the industry…like Atlanta…Marisa Pope, DC…Merrill Shugoll…NY…Todd Beiderman…NJ…Steve Schlesinger….Dallas…Jessica Jossett…and of course you!
Rick Johnson says:
How about Pittsburgh PA, Terry Bradshaw, Mean Joe Greene, Willie Stargell, Roberto Clemente, Mario Lemieux, Sid the Kid. New York City, Broadway Joe. Houston, TX, Earl Campbell (Love Ya Blue), Nolan Ryan. Washington D.C. George Washington…Nixon.
That is what comes to mind for me…if I gave the subject a little more thought I could probably think of some more cities and people. One thing I have always remembered was when we went to North Tonowanda NY (Buffalo area) to visit my Aunt and Uncle, we always passed by the steel mills…which emitted an awful, awful smell. Not a person, but…
Have a nice weekend Merrill! I look forward to the fun Friday’s.
Adam Jolley says:
Cincinnati is an easy one. This city is Pete Rose. The stadium sits on Pete Rose Way. Pete grew up on the west side and went to school in Western Hills.
Merrill Dubrow says:
Adam,
Very good one for sure! Met him a month ago and instantly thought of the big Red Machine and the city of Cincinnati.
Thanks for your comments.

Karen Flannery says:
For many years Chicago was associated with Al Capone. In the 1990′s that changed to Michael Jordan. You might also have heard of Mayor Daley – father and son. There is a new guy on the scene who has done a lot for Chicago – his name is Barack Obama.
Steve Gentile says:
As a kid, my dad’s CPA office was located in the Brill Building. Although now home to the SNL executive team, as a kid it was home to many agents and the stars that they represented. Office visits always involved a special sighting that was extraordinary and “normal” – my dad, seeing them regularly, seemed on a first name basis – Joe was Mr Namath to me, Wilt was that “oh my gosh great Knicks star”, Frank was “Mr Sinatra” who pinched my cheek and John was the greatest musician alive!
And of course there was Billy, the matre ‘d at the original Lindy’s which was always crowded, always lively, and always had a seat waiting for my dad and his kids. To me as a kid, it was like traveling across the country with folks stopping to say hello to my dad, in the restaurant or elevator!
Merrill Dubrow says:
Steve,
I never knew that about your dad – that is really cool and I am so glad you shared that with us. You will love an upcoming post (in a few weeks) entitled “brush with fame”. My sense is you will have alot to contribute.
Thanks.
Merrill
Steve Gentile says:
Merrill – I look forward to it. My dad was a very low key guy (unlike his second born son;-) so to him, he rarely showed a “WOW!!!” which I guess I did shamelessly. Now, my brushes with fame tend to be Roz from Great Neck who is a Tropicana loyalist or Tom from Greenwich who is a private investment specialist! All the same, it’s all about the people and the stories of their lives – nothing like getting life-coaching at age 8 from Ali or baseball tips from Yogi!
