| Wade Phillips |
I hate to see someone lose their job, I hate to see someone’s contract not get renewed and I really, really hate to see someone get fired. With all of that said, no matter what happens moving forward, Wade Phillips CAN’T be the coach of the Dallas Cowboys for the 2010 season. Here are a few reasons why:
- He is too nice of a guy
- He is Jerry Jones’ puppet
- He can’t win the big games
- He can’t win in December
- I don’t think he is great with the media
All of that is JUST MY OPINION. I have never met the man and I am not in the inner circle of the Dallas Cowboys. But here is what I do know. The Dallas Cowboys deserve a great coach! The Dallas Cowboys deserve someone that every year will give them a chance to win the Super Bowl. The Dallas Cowboys need a coach who can make a positive difference in every football game. The Dallas Cowboys need a coach that can argue and win some arguments with Jerry Jones. The Cowboys are one of, if not the biggest sports franchise in the world, and the fans, Dallas community, NFL and past players all deserve the best.
Sorry, Wade. You need to go.
Jerry Jones is a great marketer and businessman. Extremely successful. More successful than I will ever be or ever dream of but I think he should look himself in the mirror and relinquish some of his football duties and decision making.
I believe they should hand the keys to Cowboys Stadium, the team and the entire football operation to Bill Cowher. He is a great coach and will allow Jerry to hoist the Super Bowl trophy very, very quickly!
And by the way. How cool would it be if he was able to do that his first year with the Cowboys with the Super Bowl being played in Dallas.
Your turn.
- Do you agree with my assessment?
- What do you think of my choice?
- Who do you think should coach the Cowboys in 2010?
I look forward to reading your comments.

Ed Sugar says:
As a fan of UCLA athletics, I would urge Mr. Jones and America’s team to sign Uncle Petey Carroll away from the USC. I would still root against him and the ‘boys, but he would be out of my backyard.
Merrill Dubrow says:
Ed,
Not sure what will happen to Mr Carroll. I actually think he is perfect for the college game and wouldn’t give the pro’s another chance or at least I don’t believe he would be successful.

Ed Sugar says:
Merrill, his program is under the microscope at the moment. If there is any indications that the Trojans will be placed on probation, Uncle Petey is flying out of town as fast as you can say John Calipari. Yes, J. Jones has brought in some very good head coaches in the past (J. Johnson, Barry and the Tuna) but he has also replaced them with some very questionable people (Gaily, Campo & Phillips). If he can get Carroll at the right time and the right place, Uncle Petey could be looking for real estate in South Lake.
Ed Sugar says:
Speaking with a friend this morning on this subject and he correctly points out that J. Jones and Da Boys have had very good success in the past when they have brought in a top notch college coach. Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer won titles at the collegiate level and then brought Da Boys their last three Super Bowl trophies.
Merrill Dubrow says:
Ed,
Now that Wade Phillips have won a few games in a row – he might be safe. It will be interesting to see what Jerry does if the Cowboys win on Sunday and win the NFC East . And even better if Minnesota wins they will get a bye and the number 2 seed. I never thought that would have happened.
More to follow.

Scott Waller says:
I think Jones will dance with candidates like Shannahan, Carroll, etc…just to flush Bill Cowher out of retirement. He’s the prize.
I’ve heard that Cowher is too smart and prideful to get close to Jerry’s micro management of the team. I think money will talk and Jerry will get him IF he wants him.
He should want him.
Ed Dobbles says:
As a Packer fan, I’m cheering for Dallas to continue to have a bad coach. Few things in Football bring me more joy than seeing Dallas lose. So here’s hoping Jerry takes the Wayne Fontes, Lovie Smith school of coaching and sticks with whoever makes Dallas, just good enough to almost win, but ultimately lose in a heartbreaking fashion.
Lynn Stalone says:
And how about a new QB while you’re at it?? Romo is a whiner… Perhaps a new coach can whip him into shape, but I’m not convinced.
Honestly, I’m with Ed D. Keep the marginal coach and fumble through the next season.
GO CHARGERS!!!
Will Morris says:
Much of your assessment of Phillips is correct, but I tend to defend him because everybody beats up on him. He doesn’t have to be good with the media to satisfy me. I guess Bill Parcells was entertaining with the media, but a jerk. Belichieck isn’t so good with the media (see above). I don’t mind him being a nice guy. Tony Dungy is a nice guy.
Bill Parcells wasn’t Jerry’s puppet and he didn’t win any big games with the Cowboys nor did he have a winning record in December. I am tired of guys like Parcells and Jimmy Johnson maintaining their God status for what they did before free agency. Jimmy Johnson was a failure with the Dolphins, with Marino as a QB. Didn’t he lose his last playoff game by 60 points and then quit? Wasn’t that his dream job that he stole away from Don Shula after tricking Jones into getting rid of him?
My disappointment with the Cowboys this year and much of last year is with the Golden Boy, Jason Garrett. Does an offensive genius throw two passes to Hurd on the goal line against Champ Bailey? Does a genius run a declining Marion Barber right at Hainsworth twice in a row? Garrett is hard headed and he has cost us a couple of games this year. Our defense has been great the last part of this year with only a couple of glitches against the Giants.
They (whoever they are) say the defense wins championships and the Cowboy defense is doing great right now. I know, the comment will be that Phillips should be a defensive coordinator, and that is probably his strength.
It is possible that Phillips wins two NFC East Championships in three years and hopefully wins one or more playoff games. Do you fire him then because he isn’t good with the media?
Is Phillips the perfect head coach? No. Would he be my first choice? No. But does he deserve to get fired? No. Just my opinion.
Michael Carrizales says:
He is too nice of a guy
-When is being nice a bad thing?
He is Jerry Jones’ puppet
- Jerry needs a puppet
He can’t win the big games
- He beat New Orleans and Phily
He can’t win in December
- 2 for 2 is better
I don’t think he is great with the media
- Was Bill Parcell’s any better? I say he is keeping his composure for the most part, which is good enough.
Do you agree with my assessment?
– No, but I can respect it; Look at Washington, they had 5 plus talented coaches in ten years and what did that do for them? We need some stability and patience.
What do you think of my choice?
Bill Cowher is a great coach. It took him 10 years (I think) to win a Super Bowl. Wade has made it to the playoffs 2 out of 3 years. Shouldn’t he get another year or two if you believe in the Bill Cowher idea?
Wade is not perfect, but Jerry NEEDS a puppet and a yes man. Marty S or Bill Cowher are great coaches, but they are not puppets. Do you think Jerry is going to change? I highly doubt it.
Who do you think should coach the Cowboys in 2010?
I would love to see Bill Cowher in 2010, but that would mean Jerry would have to give up the reigns and that is not going to happen. So I say Wade Phillips for the 2010 coach. He is a very good defensive mind also. I will go with the devil I know versus the next puppet I don’t know. I don’t believe Jerry will hire Bill Cowher. I do respect your opinion though.
Merrill Dubrow says:
Quick update – The Cowboys and Wade Phillips won their 4th game in a row – all in December/January. Next stop Minnesota. Who knows maybe I was wrong after all!
Go Cowboys!!
