A few weeks ago I was thinking about the most recognizable business symbols and trademarks.
I closed my eyes and quickly jotted down a list of companies that I could recognize based on their symbols and trademarks. My list included:
- Frito Lay
- Ford
- IBM
- Dell
- Pepsi
- Apple
- Wal-Mart
- Home Depot
With my top three being:
- Nike
- McDonalds
- Coca Cola
- What do you think of my choices?
- Close your eyes and tell me your top three most recognizable symbols and trademarks
I look forward to reading your comments.

John Joseph says:
I agree with two of your choices. I would not have picked Nike in my top three. Maybe Google or Apple.
The three that come into my mind first are McDonald’s, Coca Cola and GM. Maybe it’s because I drive one of their cars. They have certainly been in the news a lot all year.
Happy New Year to all!
Merrill Dubrow says:
John,
Appreciate your comments. GM is a good choice for sure.
Thanks for your contribution.

Fee Sepahi says:
I agree with all of your top three.
All the best wishes for the New Year!

Ed Sugar says:
I would add the Playboy bunny logo. Hugh Hefner and Playboy magazine are long past their glory days, but I have a feeling that logo will carry on and have some cultural/socio significance for many years to come.
Fee Sepahi says:
Good one Ed. I also now think the Marlboro man and GE, though very generational, will be very recognizable!
Merrill Dubrow says:
Ed,
You are probably right – enjoy the holiday season.

Melanie says:
I would add Windows to the list. For all of you Apple snobs out there, this is a question about the logos, not the software, so go easy on me, please.
Also, Taco Bell. My kids could read Taco Bell before anything else because the recognized the logo.
Kelly Heatly says:
Nike, McDonald’s and Starbucks – the familiar green siren
Jeff Drucker says:
Boston Red Sox “B” Maybe it is just the fanatic in me…
Dan Prince says:
Interesting that none of the big energy companies were on anyone’s lists! When I drive, I look for the distinct Shell logo when it was time to refuel. The BP logo is very recognizable, but pretty recent (like Google, unlike Coke). And then there’s Exxon, a very visible mark, but a brand I still avoid b/c of their bad behavior (remember Valdez oil spill?)
Karen Bills says:
I agree with many that have already been noted – who can dispute McDonalds and Coke? I would probably also add Disney, the Red Cross, and Toyota to the most recognized list…
Betsy says:
What about Target (red bulls eye), Disney (Mickey Mouse) and Camel cigarettes (Joe Camel)?
Jocelyn Smith says:
The Disney logo is actually the Magic Kingdom! Very recognizable!!
Amy Shields says:
I would definitely knock Coca-Cola off your list (uh-hum…we know you’re a loyalist but the fact that is says “Coca-Cola” across the label kind of takes it out of the running for me. I’d put the Apple logo top 3 for sure.
Thomas Ball says:
Interesting list…..
Curious observations:
1. For all of the promo. dollars they spend, only one auto and NO presence of from financial, spirits, or pharma sectors
2. Wondering what trademarks would appear in EMEA, China, Brazil……?
Jeffrey Lorber says:
How about the Mercedes logo?
Kimberly White says:
Starbucks, Apple and Nike would be my top three but I do not disagree with any of your top choices. As for Thomas’ question about which trademarks that are most visible globally, based on all of my travels, I would say Coca Cola and McDonald’s are the top two. To be honest, I have been in some pretty remote places around the world and always see Coca Cola signs and thick glass bottles of Coke (and orange Fanta).
Happy New Year Merrill!

Laurie says:
Dunkin Donut, I was on Martha’s Vineyard with a 3 year old who pointed out a t-shirt and said Dunkin Donuts… the word Red Sox was written on the t-shirt, but the colors and font were that of Dunkin Donuts… Pretty Amazing that a 3 year old can recognize it.
Steve Gentile says:
I can safely say that my first, second, and third choices are extremely New York biased – #3, NY Jets – #2, NY Yankees – #1, I [heart] NY ;-D
