Recently I received an email (thanks T.A.) that contained an article from 24/7 Wall St. predicting the top 10 brands that will go away in 2011. To qualify, they expect the brand to be gone by the end of 2011, or for its parent to be sold or go into Chapter 11.
Since most of us are researchers and certainly all of us have an opinion I thought it would be fun to see what you think.
So today I will be showing you a brand with a short description from the article and you get to say if the brand will be going away by the end of 2011. There will be a prize $200 American express gift certificate to the person who has the highest score. This contest will be open for 30 days and we will post the winner on 12/31/2011.

I haven’t used block buster in years. I use netflix and pay per view movies, but it’s hard to imagine them going away completely when they were so huge for so long. It will be interesting to see what happens.

No idea which brands will come or go. Some, like Readers Digest, may simply survive in forms very different from what they are today. Others may survive as remainder brands, brands that used to have meaning but which have been reduced to discount status.

One of our companies is very close to filing for bankruptcy:
Movie rental giant Blockbuster could file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as early as today, the Wall Street Journal is reporting.
The Dallas-based company is expected to file for a prepackaged bankruptcy, according to the Journal.
Hundreds of Blockbuster retail locations could go into play as the company restructures. The Los Angeles Times reported last month that the company could close between 500 and 800 out of more than 3,400 stores nationwide.
The company’s typically prime locations are expected to draw plenty of interest.
Here are the Blockbuster locations in Middle Tennessee, as listed on Google Maps. At least one location listed — at 269 Franklin Road in Brentwood — has already closed and is being converted into a Chipotle Mexican Grill.
