Are You Ready For Some Football? Join The Week 5 Merrill Dubrow Blog Football Pool.

Friday, September 28th, 2012

The first 4 weeks of the season have been unbelievable, exciting, drama-filled and difficult to pick who the winners of each game will be. With that said Brandon  Bettaga, Jessica Cons and Sharon Gautschy have been able to rise above everyone else and win the first three weeks of the pool. All of them qualify for  the Championship week and a chance at the grand prize of $500 and more importantly, bragging rights for the next 9 months!!!

In addition, the two people who have the highest cumulative score (these standings will be updated weekly) will be given a spot in the grand prize pool along with the weekly winners. As of right now Roger Austin, Jessica Cons, Tal Shahar and Jennifer Stocks are tied with 32 wins.

Do You Love Drive Thru Windows As Much As I Do?

Wednesday, September 26th, 2012

I must admit that drive up windows are great, especially when I have the kids in the car. A few weeks ago on a Saturday after baseball practice I needed to run to the bank, drop off some dry cleaning and pick up some medicine. I did all that while listening to some music and the kids battling in the car!

I love drive up windows – they are easy, efficient and allow me to do something else while I am waiting in line. It’s funny because when I am alone, I rarely use drop off windows but with the kids I love it.

  • What other retail businesses should have a drive thru?
  • Do you use drive thrus for some things (coffee), but not for other things like banking?
  • I say ‘no’ to a drive thru restaurant because I don’t want the kids to eat in my car – What do you say?

I look forward to reading your comments.

Time To Buy A Few More Ties. Any New Ideas On Where I Should Go?

Monday, September 24th, 2012

Yes, I am old school and yes, I really do like wearing suits and ties. I realize that most of you might think I am nuts and crazy, but I am hoping you can get past that a little bit today and help me with my request.

For the past few years I have been shopping at Charles Tyrwhitt in New York for my ties. I really like the selection and staff. The prices are somewhat reasonable and they have some amazing ties. With that said I am always on the lookout for a new place to shop. Always looking for a new selection and colors and need your help in doing so.

Where should I go?

  • If you aren’t a tie person, but give one as a gift – where do you shop?
  • If you are in need of a tie for a wedding or a business meeting, where do you go?
  • Have you ever been to Charles Tyrwhitt in New York?

I look forward to reading your comments.

PS – Feel free to add a comment or two making fun of the fact that I still wear a tie!

I am shocked at all of the upsets that have taken place in the first few weeks of the 2012 season…I wish I had correctly picked some of them!!! It has been an amazing year, lots of fun and having attended the MRA conference the past few days, there is clearly a lot of people who enjoy participating in the pool and have side bets with friends, spouses, family members or industry contacts!

I Love This Message – What Do You Think?

Wednesday, September 19th, 2012

A few weeks ago, I went to a new bakery to pick up some dessert to celebrate my son’s birthday. The name of the bakery was eatZi’s, located in Grapevine, Texas. I have gone past a few other locations but never gone in. Everything about this place was great. The smell walking in was amazing, the service staff was so friendly and helpful, and ALL had a huge smile on their face. They had free samples to try and lots of great food.

After I paid for my order I was walking out of the store and noticed the message on the door which read, “See You Tomorrow”.

I thought that was awesome! What a message to send me home with. Here is what it means to me:

  • You just had a great time with our products and services which will force you to come back.
  • We look forward to seeing you again.
  • You will tell your friends and family about the experience.

Ok, now your turn.

  • What do you think it means?
  • Do you like the message?

I look forward to reading your comments.

Do You Pay For Your Dry Cleaning Ahead Of Time? I Don’t And Never Will.

Monday, September 17th, 2012

So, once a week I go to the dry cleaner and drop off my dry cleaning for the week and pick up my shirts/ suits/etc. that are ready. Every week without exception the same thing happens. I give the person behind the counter my ticket to pick up my clothes and put my dirty clothes on the counter and every time the person asks me if I would like to pay for the clothes I am ‘picking up and the clothes I am dropping off’ or just the clothes I am ‘picking up’. For years I would chuckle to myself and probably now get this perplexed look on my face because I can’t think of one benefit for me of doing that.

Here are a few reasons (in my mind) why it makes no sense for me to pay for my dry cleaning ahead of time:

  1. The dry cleaner suddenly goes out of business – not only do I not get my clothes back, but I paid for a service that I never got.
  2. The dry cleaner loses my clothes. I have had that happen before and I have to believe the only feeling worse than finding out that your dry cleaner has lost your clothes is to have paid for them up front and then they lost your clothes.

Are there any benefits to the customer?

  • I don’t get it… and I really want to understand.
  • Can you please help me?

I look forward to your comments.

PS – If a business wants you to do something out of the ordinary shouldn’t it benefit the customer a little bit?

Congratulations to Brandon Bettega who won week one in a tie breaker over Scott Waller and Richard McDaniel.  For winning week 1 Brandon received a $50 American Express gift card. Remember, the weekly winners will be given a spot in the grand prize pool which will be during week 17 for an opportunity to win $500 and of course bragging rights for the next 6 months.  Week two started with a Packer victory last night which 80% of the pool participants picked correctly.

Please remember to use the same name and email address for the entire year. This makes it much easier to get the cumulative totals correct. Also, if you use the same email, our system will count the most recent email as your picks.

In addition, the two people who have the highest cumulative score (these standings will be updated weekly) will be given a spot in the grand prize pool along with the weekly winners.

Attention Researchers: Where Is The Best Position To Start Your Research Career?

Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

Yes, I have been in the market research industry for over 25 years. Yes, I love this great industry and yes, I started as an interviewer and very proud of that fact. A number of people in my office started as coders and programmers. With the implosive of online and outsourcing outside the United States, a lot of those jobs have gone away. Many of us never would have had the opportunity to enter the market research industry because the entry point now is very different than back in the day.

The question is, “What is the best place to start your research career?”

Do you think it is a project manager?

  • Most companies have this position and would allow you the opportunity to work on many different projects, industries and different methodologies at once.

What about in the social media group?

  • Clearly this is a hot position right now, but for how long?

What about a database analyst?

  • Not all companies have this position, but for the ones that do, this could be a very interesting spot where you can gain you valuable experience working with numbers and looking for those key insights that everyone is starving for.

Your turn!

What do you think of my 3 choices?

What other positions do you think would be the best entry point to start your research career?

I look forward to reading your comments.

What Cities Are The Most Affectionate?

Monday, September 10th, 2012

As I travel, I always find myself looking around. I really enjoy people watching and looking at all the different sites around the world. And to me, that is part of my learning process. I tend to notice a lot of things and question some for sure!

I was on a recent trip to Chicago and as I entered the casino for dinner, I noticed that couples weren’t as affectionate as they are in most other casinos. I must admit, I always thought couples tend to hold hands or hug a lot in casinos, but I guess not in Chicago.

This gave me reason to pause and think of cities where couples tend to be very affectionate by either lots of hugs, lots of holding hands, or even quick little kisses.

Here are two cities that make my list for most affectionate:

  • Las Vegas – for me this seems to be number one. Perhaps it has something to do with the thousands of weddings that take place there or all the night clubs, late night events, and gambling.
  • NY City – Maybe it is me but it looks like everyone goes over one of the bridges or tunnels to Manhattan and gets more affectionate. To me love is in the air for sure in NY!

Now your turn.

What do you think of my choices?

What other cities make the list?

I look forward to reading your comments.
