Personal Space…How Close is “Too Close”?

Monday, September 29th, 2014

In speaking with a friend of mine at a recent conference, he said, “Wow, that person is a close talker, he tends to invade my personal space” Of course, this got me wondering…“how close is too close”?

When I asked him what he considered to be “too close”, he said that he thinks 2-3 feet is too close. I thought about his answer and to me, that seems right…I guess…but I really want to know what other people think!

So I ask you today:

  • How close is someone to you when they are invading your personal space?
  • How much does your answer change if the person is a good friend or a family member?

Minivan….Really? Maybe!

Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

Last month, I was sitting in a restaurant with a buddy of mine (E.S.) when a women walked in and asked if I was the owner of a Ford Explorer in the parking lot. After a short pause and a skeptical “yes” response from me, she proceeded to tell me that she was very sorry for hitting my PARKED car. I must admit, I was really impressed that she came in to let me know because I am not sure how many people would have done that. This post actually isn’t about that…it’s actually about the car that I was given while mine was in the shop being repaired.

My friends at Enterprise Rent A Car didn’t have a lot of choices available for rental, so it was either a very small car or a minivan. Well, since my kids tend to get irritated with each other within a millisecond of being in a small car…I took the minivan. I have to say: It had a ton of room, was very easy to get in and out of and it had a little bit of pep to it!

My questions today are:

  • Have you ever had a minivan?
  • Did you like the experience?
  • Do you have a minivan right now?
  • Would you own a minivan in the future?

Are You Like Me? Do You Have Fake Aunts/Uncles?

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014

Ok, let me try to explain today’s post a little better because some of you might think I am crazy. I do have fake Aunts/Uncles…but what I mean by that isn’t “fake” as in “pretend” or “imaginary”. I am actually referring to individuals who have been lifelong friends of my parents and have been very instrumental in my life but aren’t blood related to me. I refer to these people as “Aunt” or “Uncle”. I hope that makes a little bit more sense.

Recently, I lost my “Uncle” Booksie (was a teacher for years) and when I shared that information with some friends, they asked me if it was my mom/dad’s brother. When I explained who he was, I started to wonder if most people also have Aunts/Uncles who aren’t necessarily blood related.

So I ask you today:

  • Do you have people who aren’t blood related to you but are still referred to as “Aunt” or “Uncle”?
  • In a lot of ways, my non-blood related aunts and uncles were equally (if not more) influential and present in my life than my biological aunts and uncles. Is the same true for you?

What Are The Oldest Things You Still Have?

Wednesday, September 10th, 2014

A few weeks ago, I hurt my upper thigh. I wanted to work out that night and I knew that the only way I could do so was if I wrapped it really tight to try and downplay the pain. As I was looking for an ace bandage, I found a wrap that I used on my chest when I broke my sternum…40 years ago. I decided to actually use that over the ace bandage and (surprisingly!) it worked very well!

This instance gave me time to pause and think: Am I pack rat? Do I keep things forever? This got me thinking about some of the oldest things that I have. Here are a few that come to mind:

  • My First Baseball Glove it’s an A2000 glove and it’s so old that I’m using shoe laces to keep it in tact!
  • My Baseball Card Collection that I started when I was about 7 years old.
  • Some Canadian Mint Coins (my mom is from Canada) these coins were given to me by my aunts and uncles 45+ years ago.
  • A Walter Payton Shirt Walter Payton is my favorite football player of all time and my college roommate gave me the shirt (thanks B.P.) almost 35 years ago!

    Okay, now it’s your turn!

    • Do you tend to keep things for a long time?
    • What are the oldest items that you have?

I look forward to reading your comments!

I Never Thought That….

Monday, September 8th, 2014

Life has so many twists and turns; just when you think you have something figured out, something happens and you go back to the drawing board. Recently, I was thinking about my life and about some of the twists and turns that have happened. This led me to fill in the blank for this statement:

I never thought that _________

  • I never thought that I would live in Texas!
  • I never thought that I would have worked in the Research industry for over 30 years!
  • I never thought that I would work out 5 times per week consistently for 10 years!

    Okay, now it’s your turn!
