Attention Sports Fans Ok I Don’t Get It — Everyone Seems To Love Soccer But Me!

June 11th, 2010

Last week I was catching up on my reading and saw the Sports Illustrated issue that had the caption on the cover “THE BEAUTIFUL GAME, What soccer means to the world.” The picture was a number of kids playing soccer on some types of make shift field. I actually liked the picture and the smiles on the kids’ faces.

Here is my question. Or actually questions!

But first a statement…

I don’t get it!

  • What am I missing?

  • I don’t like to watch soccer on TV!

  • I don’t like to go to a soccer game!

  • I don’t even like playing soccer!

  • Again what am I missing?

I have been to the World Cup game with 80,000 fans and I may have been the only one that didn’t enjoy the game.

Since most soccer games are low scoring games maybe that has something to do with it. The games are about positioning and defense and frankly I would rather go to a baseball game that was 12-10 or a football game 38-35 as opposed to a shutout.

Can you please help me!

  • Do you like soccer?

  • Did you play as a kid?

  • Do you play as an adult?

  • Have you been to a World Cup game?

  • What is beautiful about the game?

I look forward to reading your comments and helping me understand what I am missing.

Attention Sports Fans Who Is The MOST MEMORABLE Athlete Of All Time?

June 9th, 2010

A little different spin today. I would love to discuss not the best athlete of all time but the most memorable. The word memorable could mean a lot of different things.

  • It could mean they changed their sport like Jackie Robinson, Bill Russell or Joe Montana

  • It could mean he did different things on the field or court like Mark Fidrych

  • It could mean they were very flamboyant like Hector Camacho

  • It could mean they were very confident or over confident like Larry Bird

  • It could mean they had an ugly temper like John McEnroe

  • It could mean they were soft spoken and just were great like Walter Payton

  • It could mean they had amazing celebrations on the field like Chad Ochocinco

Not sure what it means to you so I will let you pick whatever definition you would like.

For me here are a few of my most memorable:

  • Arthur Ashe

  • Dennis Rodman

  • Jimmy Connors

Now your turn:

  • Who is the most memorable athlete of all time?

  • What do you think of my choices?

  • What is your definition?

I look forward to reading your comments.

Sorry Walgreens This Sales Promotion Doesn’t Work For Me!

June 7th, 2010

I was buying a Sunday Dallas Morning News newspaper last week in a Walgreens and I noticed a promotion they had that was displayed at the cash register. The item was a book that was selling for $21.99 or you could buy two for $43.98. Even though it was very early, I could still do the math and quickly figured out that there was NO discount for buying additional copies of the book. Quickly I thought — Are you kidding me! That’s the promotion you went with! That’s the impulse item you put next to the register. Even though I am not a retail guru I would think that the planners or store managers would use that sacred space for items that really move and frankly can make them a lot of money.

Instead they go with a promotion that to me isn’t even a promotion.

  • With the economy being the way it is doesn’t everyone want and almost need to get a deal?

  • Isn’t everyone looking to buy something on sale?

There are a number of promotions and deals that really can work. Lots of retail stores are doing:

  • buy one get one free

  • Pay full price for the first item and the second is a penny

  • Buy two suits and get a sport jacket for free

Retail stores are really getting creative these days.

  • What promotions do you like?

  • What promotions in your opinion don’t work or a total waste of time?

  • What retail store does the best job?

I look forward to reading your comments.

Have You Checked Out The List Of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants?

June 4th, 2010

Yes I love to eat! Yes I like to try new restaurants. I was reading an article the other day which was about S. Pellegrino’s annual “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” list which was released at a celebrity-chef-studded event in London, England, marking the ninth edition of the much buzzed-about (and hotly debated) catalogue of the international culinary landscape.

The illustrious list is compiled by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy — an 806-member panel of the globe’s most venerated chefs, food critics, restaurateurs and gourmands.

A few things about the list:

  • No. 1 spot on annual list goes to Noma in Copenhagen, Denmark

  • After four years at No. 1, Spanish restaurant El Bulli takes No. 2 spot

  • Eight of the restaurants crowned this year are in the United States

After four consecutive years ranked as the World’s Best Restaurant, Spanish restaurant El Bulli takes a seat at No. 2. However, that won’t make it any easier to snag a table. Only 8,000 reservations are accepted every year, out of a reported million requests.

Eight of the restaurants crowned this year — Alinea in Chicago, Illinois; Daniel, Per Se, Le Bernardin, Momofuku Ssäm Bar, wd~50 and Eleven Madison Park in New York; and The French Laundry in Yountville, California — are in the United States, the most by any country

Of the remaining 42 top finishers, six are in France; Spain and Italy each have five. Here is the list:

1. Noma (Copenhagen, Denmark) 26. Momofuku Ssäm Bar (New York)
2. El Bulli (Roses, Spain) 27. Quay Restaurant (Sydney, Australia)
3. The Fat Duck (Bray, England) 28. Iggy’s (Singapore)

24. Les Créations de Narisawa (Tokyo, Japan) 49. Hibiscus (London, England)
25. Mathias Dahlgren (Stockholm, Sweden) 50. Eleven Madison Park (New York)

Ok I will admit it – I haven’t been to ANY of these restaurants and only heard of a handful. When I think of the best restaurants I have ever been to my list would include:

  • Abe & Louise in Boston

  • Postrio in SF

  • Quality Meats in NY

What about you?

  • Have you been to any of these restaurants?

  • If so how was the experience?

  • What is the BEST restaurant you have ever been to?

I look forward to reading your comments.

What Celebrity Endorsers Do You REALLY REALLY Trust?

June 2nd, 2010

I was reading a very interesting article a few weeks ago that I wanted to share. The article was about the Davie Brown Index (DBI) and talked about a number of things.

Davie Brown Entertainment, a Dallas celebrity research company, conducts online surveys to determine how we feel about celebrities – are they trustworthy, do we like them and would we buy what they’re hawking?  For each DBI survey, 1,000 Americans from a pool of 4.5 million are asked about a celebrity’s eight key marketing attributes. Those results make up an overall DBI rating.

The article listed a number of categories that including overall score, awareness, appeal and endorsement. The one category I would like to focus on and discuss today is trust.

The DBI listed the top ten celebrities that people trust:

  1. James Earl Jones

  2. Morgan Freeman

  3. Pat Summitt

  4. Will Smith

  5. Warren Buffett

  6. Tom Hanks

  7. James Garner

  8. Denzel Washington

  9. Willie Mays

  10. Ron Howard

Interesting list.  I decided to pause for a minute and think about the list and who I would include and replace. Here are some of my choices:

  • I would take off Pat Summitt, Willie Mays, and Will Smith

  • I would move up Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington & Ron Howard

  • I would add Robert Redford, Sean Connery and ugh… Derek Jeter.

Ok your turn:

  • What do you think of the list?

  • What do you think of my choices?

  • Are you surprised Oprah WASN’T on the list?

  • What changes would you make to the list?

I look forward to reading your comments.

What Do/Did You Collect?

May 28th, 2010

When I was a kid I couldn’t wait to run to the store and buy baseball cards. I loved the sport, loved watching the sport, loved going to Fenway Park and even though I wasn’t very good I loved playing baseball. At night I would always take out my shoebox of baseball cards and look at the players bio’s, stats and try and answer the trivia questions. Ok I will admit it I collected baseball cards as a kid. I still have a ton of cards and planning on giving the collection which includes a ton of autographs to my kids.

When I was younger I also collected stamps but didn’t have the same passion I did as baseball cards. Even though I am not sure I would call it a collection (maybe I should) I have over 1500 books (estimate) with subjects ranging from sports, to research and business.

Lots of my friends collect different things that range from plates, magnets, postcards, maps, beer cans and many other things.

Now your turn:

  • What did you collect as a kid?

  • What do you collect now?

  • What do some of your friends collect?

I look forward to reading your comments.

Bye Bye Stadiums — So Long, Thanks For The Memories!

May 26th, 2010

Was Sunday April 12, 2010 just another day? Perhaps some may think so. It is 7:00am and the sun is about to come up, this morning was different than most since in the blink of an eye Texas Stadium home to the Dallas Cowboys and 5 Super Bowl trophies is being imploded! I thought about going and watching it live but decided that I would watch it on TV.

It is amazing watching stadiums that have so much history and tradition reduced to rubble in a matter of a minute.

Over the years I have been to a tremendous amount of stadiums that are no longer with us or no longer in use. Here are the first ten that came to my mind:

  1. Boston Garden

  2. The Vet in Philadelphia

  3. Jarry Park in Montreal

  4. Kingdome

  5. Tiger Stadium

  6. Shea stadium

  7. Old Yankee Stadium

  8. Chicago Stadium

  9. Busch Stadium

  10. The Forum in Los Angeles

As you know I love going to stadiums and sporting events. Some of my favorite moments at stadiums that are no longer with us include:

  • A trip to Jarry Park in 1971 with my parents and having Steve Carleton tossing me a ball — which I actually caught!

  • A trip with E.S. to the 1993 NFC championship game at Texas Stadium – wow I still get chills thinking about that game

  • The 1984 NBA finals at the old Boston Garden between the Celtics and Lakers

Now your turn:

  • What are you favorite stadiums that are no longer with us and why?

  • What stadiums have you been to that are no longer in use?

  • Have you watched any stadiums implode?

I look forward to reading your comments.

Nice Use Of Words TARGET — Keep Up The Good Work!

May 24th, 2010

Over the weekend I was at a Target store and after purchasing a few items I was standing in the checkout line. The line had maybe 3-4 people in it and as I was looking around for some impulse items to buy (yes I am guilty of that) I noticed something interesting on the cash register. As the person in front of me was paying I noticed something come up on the register that I had never noticed before. It said “The guest is entering their pin number”. I assumed the person in front of me was using a debit card and no, that wasn’t the interesting thing about this. To me it was the word guest! I thought that was a GREAT word to use. To me they could have used a number of other words like client or customer. But they didn’t they chose to use the word GUEST.

When I think of the word GUEST I think about someone coming to my house or going to someone’s house and be treated very nice or very special almost like a special occasion.

  • As a retail shopper don’t you want to be treated special?

  • Don’t you want to be treated nice?

  • Doesn’t the word GUEST imply that?

Ok you may think I am a little nuts for noticing this on the cash register but I do pride myself on noticing everything. So please get past the point that I might be crazy.

  • What do you think of the word GUEST?

  • Have you noticed this before?

  • Should that word be more prominently displayed in their stores?

  • Are there other words that you like to describe a customer?

I look forward to your comments.

Time To Go Camping Are You In Or Out?

May 21st, 2010

Last week I was talking to a buddy and the conversation ended up going into a discussion about camping.  He was telling me that he was going camping with his son and wanted to know if I have ever done that, liked doing that and would ever consider doing that?

Then we started chatting about funny camping stories and found ourselves laughing up a storm at stories we have heard in the past.

My funniest camping story was when I was in college my buddies and I had rented a tent, all the other stuff and drove down to Cape Cod to rent a camping spot. We were all excited except one thing didn’t cooperate the weather of course… It basically poured and we couldn’t set up the tent. Ok I am not handy but my friends were and after battling the elements for a few hours, we ended up in a hotel room and tossed the tent in the corner for the weekend.

Ok stop laughing please – we tried and failed. Actually I am not a camping guy and hope I don’t have to do it anytime soon.

Ok your turn:

  • Do you like to camp?

  • Have you run into any animals in the wilderness?

  • Any funny camping stories to share?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Attention Sports Fans — Who Is The Big Three Of All Time?

May 19th, 2010

A few weeks ago I was having a sports debate with a few friends A.T, S.S., and M.N., The discussion was about who are the best 3 players to ever play together. Over the years the media has referred to this term as the Big Three. When I give myself a minute to think about this here is what I come up with:

  • Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish

  • Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Johnny Bucyk

  • Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada

I lived through both the Celtics and Bruins Big Three and as much as I would love to admit one of them is the greatest of all time I don’t believe it is. The Yankees Big Three is amazing. Mariano and Derek are 100% first time hall of famers and Posada has a chance to get in. All of them have been together for 16 years! Yes 16 years – that will probably NEVER happen again in the history of any sport. In addition they have too many World Series rings… It hurts too much for me to name all the years or count all the rings.

  • The question is are they the best of all time?

  • Who else should be in the discussion?

I look forward to reading your thoughts and comments.
