I love animals. I really do! I really like going to the zoo; especially a beautiful one that has lots of different animals in their natural habitats. Some of the zoos are just amazing and really go to the nth degree to make sure the animals are taken care of.
Over the past few years I have enjoyed going to Walt Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the San Diego Zoo and the Washington Zoo. One of my favorite animals I have ever seen is a giant anteater which was at Animal Kingdom in Orlando. I was there with J.S. and was so amazed at how beautiful and graceful this animal is.
Some of my favorite times with my family were going to the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago and the Milwaukee Zoo. We would take a Sunday trip and often would end up at a zoo.

Hi Merrill.
I have always enjoyed going to the zoo and having nephew’s gives me a good reason to continuing going!
The ones in San Diego and Washington DC are definitely my favorites but there is a local one here in the suburbs of Philly that’s perfect to take small children to and it’s called the Elmwood Park Zoo as it’s been right-sized for the little guys and even has a pony ride.
I love all of the cats of varying sizes and it’s a toss up between to Tigers and Jaguars as to which ones are my favorites. A close third would be the Panda Bears in DC.
As for the animals I could watch for hours, it’s a toss up between Seals and Polar Bears as I love seeing them swim right up to you.
Thanks for another fun post Merrill!
PS If you love going to the zoo, you will be blown away by an African safari or a trip to Denali National Park in Alaska! Seeing wildlife in their natural habitat is truly amazing!!!!

Love Lion Country Safari in Southern Florida. You drive in your car/SUV for an hour among various types of wild animals who (mostly) roam free in a large park; a CD provides info about the animals and their habitats. Ostriches walk by the car – they are taller than the car and very interesting looking – a picture of one is now my screen saver. A herd of zebras drink from a nearby pond, etc. Then there’s a small animal zoo too, with birds, reptiles, and entertainment for the kids. A good 3-4 hour visit including lunch. I liked this better than Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Also, Southwicks Zoo in Massachusetts is great for a day with smaller children.

I’m a bear lover! My favorite is Spanky the Alaskan Brown Bear at the San Diego zoo. he is so full of personality. And they have these honey bears that really do look like Winnie the Pooh.
we have a great zoo in Atlanta, but i never remember to go. we have Pandas! Once Bramley is a little bigger, we will have to get a season’s pass.

I love the zoo, and I love the Dallas Zoo and the Fort Worth Zoo. I really enjoy going into aviaries and listening to the birds chatter. I also like watching the gorillas, though I get a little uncomfortable when they stare at me. I think the giraffe is an amazing animal…what a creative design.
More than the zoo, I absolutely love to go to Aquariums. The ones in Atlanta and Chicago are great. New Orleans was fantastic, but I haven’t been back post-Katrina, so I’m not sure if it still is. Does anyone know?

I agree with all above who have mentioned the San Diego Zoo. It is a wonderful place to visit while on vacation. Close to home I must recommend the Bronx Zoo. It a wonderful place to bring children. They offer a very inexpensive ($125 for families, now I think) pass that includes visits, parking, rides and visits to the aquarium and Central Park Zoo. The Bronx Zoo has many different sections, but among my favorites are the giraffes, the gorillas, the tigers in Wild Asia and the camel rides for children.
A great time will be had by all!

I used to live in Forth Worth and have been to the Fort Worth Zoo many times. It really is a nice zoo and we are fortunate to have a zoo like that close to us.
The coolest thing I’ve ever seen happened at that zoo about 10 years ago. I was at the kangaroo exhibit. There were a few kangaroos with joeys and I spent an hour or so watching the joeys play and go in and out of their mothers’ pouches. The joeys were fairly large, so I was surprised to see they still fit into the pouches. The mother would open her pouch slightly when the joey got close and he would dive in head first. You could see the outline of the joeys’ bodies inside the pouches (those pouches really stretch!) and watch them maneuver around until their heads poked out of the top. It really was an amazing sight!
I am sad to say I have yet to take my 13 month old son to the zoo. I am really looking forward to his first visit, but, unfortunately, I may need to wait to the fall so we all don’t fry in the Texas sun!
