Talk About Creative, Problem Solving

Monday, August 8th, 2011

A few weeks ago I got an email from my Uncle J that I thought I would share. The email was an article from the NY Times that had a few creative and fanciful ways to solve common problems with cucumbers.

  • Feeling tired in the afternoon? Put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.
  • Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog & provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.
  • Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent Undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.
  • Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the Collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!!
  • Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential Nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!
  • Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don’t have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.
  • Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!
  • Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!

I will admit I am looking forward to trying a few of these tricks. I can’t wait to try a cucumber on a squeaky hinge and also to help me erase a few crayon markings on the wall.

  • Have you heard of any of these helpful hints?
  • Have you tried any of these tricks?
  • Which one is your favorite?

I look forward to reading your comments.

Attention Baseball Fans – True Or False?

Friday, August 5th, 2011

The Philadelphia Phillies play the Boston Red Sox in the World Series.
This one is very tough for me because the Red Sox are my team and The Phillies are clearly the best team in the National League with the best pitching. Yes, the Red Sox have been amazing since their 2-10 start, have great hitting (best in the majors in 4 offensive categories), have solid pitching (just got Eric Bedard), and they will continue to make necessary changes. The Phillies have been the best team all year. With all that said, one of those teams, not sure which one yet, won’t be playing baseball in November – FALSE!

Cleveland or Milwaukee makes the playoffs.
Both teams have been surprising, both teams are playing over their head, and both teams will be watching the playoffs on TV! – FALSE

Adrian Gonzalez wins 2 MVP awards this year.
I said it when the Sox brought him to Boston and signed him to a long term deal. He is a special player. He is on pace for 28 home runs, 138 RBIs and a .357 batting average. He will also win MVP in the ALCS – I say TRUE!

NY Yankees make the playoffs.
I predicted in March they wouldn’t go to the playoffs. But, they have been playing amazingly. They haven’t lost 3 games in a row since early June when they played my Boston Red Sox. They have had the injuries that I thought they would and some guys have had mediocre seasons. With that said, Freddie Garcia and Bartolo Colon have been amazing. I never thought they would hold up but they have – another thing I was wrong about. They will make the playoffs – I say TRUE!

Texas Rangers win the West.
The Rangers have the power, the players and a GM that just traded for not 1, but 2 amazing relievers. In addition, they have played 7 more road games and are tough to beat at home. – I say TRUE!

Now your turn:

  • Do you agree with my predictions?
  • Do you have a prediction you would like us to comment on?

I look forward to hearing from you.

I Couldn’t Be This Funny If I Wanted To…

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

Some people try to be funny while others just are funny. I must admit my kids are hysterical. I don’t think they know it but some of their stuff is very funny.

Here are some classics from this past weekend:

Me: “Why did you fill in the tunnels on the castle your brother made?”
Morgan: “Dad, I think the wind just blew them in.”

Riley: “Dad, I promise you after I eat these last 3 french fries I will be full until I am hungry again.”

Me:Why did you throw sand in your brother’s face and mouth?”
Morgan: “Dad, I didn’t realize his mouth was open.”

Me: “Time to go to sleep.”
Morgan: “Dad, I am a very independent girl and I would rather you not tell me what to do.”

Me: “Did you guys actually sleep in your bathing suits last night?”
Justin: “Yes, Dad. This way when you ask us to get ready to go to the beach we are way ahead of you.”

Me: “Please put on your shirt.”
Riley: “Dad, why? Some people like me without my shirt on.”

Justin: “Dad, you looked great when your mustache was all black.”

Justin: “Dad, you lived in New Jersey?”
Me: “Yes, twice.”
Justin: “That explains a lot.”

Me: “Please don’t fight with your sister.”
Riley: “Dad, she is sleeping.”

All classics.

My favorite is the one where my daughter threw sand in her brother’s face and mouth and didn’t realize his mouth was open!

  • Which one is your favorite?
  • Are your kids funny?
  • What have they said recently that cracked you up?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Happy Anniversary To………. Me! I Mean, To ‘The Merrill Dubrow Blog!’

Monday, August 1st, 2011

Life has so many twists and turns. I will admit that when I agreed to start this blog (get this, 5 years ago) I never in a million years would have said/guessed/predicted that I would still doing this in 2011! No chance. I would like to share a few stats about the blog:

  • 740 posts

  • 261 consecutive weeks

  • 1,550 people have added a comment

  • 200,000 hits

WOW! I am really proud that we have continued to do this. We have tried to stay fresh, relevant and fun. Most of all, we tried to have everyone learn something from me or someone else’s comment. One of the most amazing statistics (yes, we keep track of everything) is that most weeks (all but 23) there has been a comment from a new person – a comment from someone new to the blog who never commented before. That either means that a long-time reader finally read a post that they wanted to contribute to, or someone new found the blog from a referral, conference presentation, Google/Bing search or some other way.

I want to thank a few people who make this possible, our internal team of Christopher D., Susan H. and Kim O. I write every post (unless it is a guest writer) but they do so much work behind the scenes to make the blog possible.

Most importantly, I want to thank YOU, the readers, my friends, family, industry contacts, college buddies, high school friends and everyone else who reads and adds their comments.

You and your comments fuel me and make the blog special to myself and to others.

Thank you for reading, sharing and commenting.

I appreciate you so much!
