As I was driving my kids to baseball a few weeks ago, I decided to quickly but safely turn around into a parking lot so I could have the kids get close to a few donkeys. Someone in town has a few of them as pets and they are very friendly, gentle and will even allow you to rub their noses – should you have the desire.
As usual, this got me thinking about what pets people have that are the most unusual. Here are a few pictures to get us started:
- What pet do you have now?
- What is the most unusual pet you have every had?
- What is the most unusual pet your friends or relatives have or had?
- Assuming you had the space, money and were allowed to have an exotic pet, what would it be?
I look forward to reading your comments.

Currently, we have one dog, a Weimaraner named Tucker, 90 lbs solid dog. Getting ready to rescue another one. We had iguanas back in the 90’s and they were pretty cool but not very lovable. Those were the most exotic for us I guess. I love animals so I would be happy at a zoo for sure (except for the bugs).

I love pets. I have two dogs now and grew up having all kinds of pets: cats, mice, finches, parrots, gerbils (not all at the same time). I had iguanas and at one time, a snake…I have always wanted a micro-pig but I think they would squeal really loudly. However, what I would really, really love is to have the DirecTV mini-giraffe. That would have to be the best pet EVER (unfortunately, they don’t exist)!

Two dogs – one retired racing Greyhound named Hamish (70#) and one Papillon/Schipperke mix named Tally (17# and aka Bat Dog, because she has the Papillon ears but is all black like a Schipperke.) We have always stuck with rescued dogs and I am a little afraid of the exotics. I have never known anyone with anything more exotic than a snake or large parrot, but I don’t think I’d like to have one as a pet!

Four Bernese Mt. Dogs!

I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel now.
I had a squirrel and racoon as a kid.
My wife is from Texas and I think that’s pretty exotic! If I had the room I’d have a pet baseball team like the Yankees.
Ed Sugar says:
Four cats – 14 year old mixed Abyssinian-Tabby, 6 year old Calico and two Tuxedos, 6 and 5 years old respectively.
If I had enough space in our yard and our neighbors did not mind, I would love to own a peacock or two.

We have two dogs – a puggle and a hound – and a very picked on cat.
Many years ago, I had a hedgehog, given to my younger sister by a love-struck boyfriend. I inherited the hedgehog and his two-story “condo” which took up half of my living room. His name was Velcro due to the noise he made when being unstuck from the AstroTurf flooring in his condo. Eventually I gave him to a friend with a landscaping business and he took him to work everyday. Velcro lived to be a ripe old age of 5.

Two dogs, both Golden Retrievers one bred to the Scottish standard (wider head, shorter snout, stockier body, lighter color) and one to the American. Once you’ve owned a Golden, the thought of owning any other pet is out of the question.
