Is It Time To Wear Headphones In The Stands?

Monday, October 8th, 2012

For the past month or so I have been spending hours in the stands watching my kids play baseball. There is nothing like a beautiful day, slight breeze and watching my kids have a smile on their face from the second they step onto the field until they take off the uniform.

As my kids get a little older, the competition on the field gets a little better and also the competition in the stands gets a little more aggressive.  Here is a sample of the comments I have heard:

  • Why is the coach talking to my son that way?
  • That wasn’t a strike!
  • He is 11 years old. What could the coach possibly be saying to my son right now?
  • I can’t believe you missed that call!
  • That umpire #$%^&*!
  • The other team isn’t that good!
  • Wow – that kid runs like a girl!

I am shocked and somewhat embarrassed at the foolishness of some people. I can’t believe what parents are saying these days.

Perhaps it is just me but it’s the weekend, you are outside, not a worry in the world and you are watching your kids play baseball.

  • Time to relax!
  • Time to cheer for EVERY kid on the field regardless of what team he plays for!

This is not the time to just yell out anything you want to anybody. If you want to do that – then perhaps you should stay home!

  • Have you noticed the same trend?
  • Are parents getting too vocal at their kids games?
  • Has this gotten out of hand?

I look forward to reading your comments.

Are You Ready For Some Football? Join The Week 6 Merrill Dubrow Blog Football Pool.

Friday, October 5th, 2012

Week 5 started last night and yes, there was another upset. But this time it was a little different for me since I had predicted it! Finally I got something right!  Last week Laurel Glenn won the pool and joins Brandon Bettaga, Jessica Cons and Sharon Gautschy who all qualify for the Championship week and a chance at the grand prize of $500 and more importantly, bragging rights for the next 9 months!!!

For anyone looking for a trend, look no further since Laurel is the third female to win in a row. Clearly the ladies have bragging rights this year!!

In addition, the two people who have the highest cumulative score (these standings will be updated weekly) will be given a spot in the grand prize pool along with the weekly winners. Tal Shahar and Scott Koenig are tied with 43 wins.

Remember, if you use the same email to enter a friend, colleague or a family member, our system will count the most recent email as your picks.

To see the current standings, click here. The results page shows this week’s current standings as well as the cumulative rankings.

All picks need to be in by 5:00pm (CST) on Thursday, October 11.

Click here to participate in this week’s pool.

Feel free to share the link and have friends, colleague, relatives, kids and anyone else you want join the pool.

Good luck to all.

PS. My son Justin has 39 overall wins and is still kicking my butt in the pool!

Hey Merrill, How Can I Get Noticed In My Company?

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012

Over the past few weeks I have had some great discussions with some friends regarding getting noticed within a company. The conversation was very spirited and had some great information and helpful hints.

With that said, here are some helpful hints that might get you noticed within your company:

  • Keep your word.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Have a positive attitude.
  • Exceed your goals.
  • Volunteer for a special project.
  • Always be team-oriented.
  • Write an article for an industry newsletter.

Now your turn:

  • What do you think of this list?
  • What’s missing?
  • How do you get noticed within your company?
  • As  a leader, what makes you notice someone?

I look forward to reading your comments.

Have You Had Any Babies Born On Your Property Recently?

Monday, October 1st, 2012

I was reading an article a few weeks ago that made me chuckle. It seems as though six baby barn owls have a new home on the San Francisco Airport Marriott, Waterfront 11th-floor balcony.

As I was reading the story I was thinking about what babies I have seen around my house, office or businesses that I might visit.

Over the years I have had a few birds born in my garage but I think one of my favorite spots to see babies was in a very large CVS sign. The nest and babies were in the bottom part of the “S”. They were really cute and close to where the entrance was. But my all-time favorite was the funny little gang, pack or whatever you are supposed to call baby armadillos that were born under my parents’ pool in Florida. Yes, they made a mess but they were really funny looking and made goofy sounds.

Now your turn: Have you had any babies born on your property?

I look forward to reading your comments.

PS. The staff even came up with names for the cute owls: Hoot, Nanny, Peter Townsend, Robert Plant, Hedwig and Archimedes
