I Don’t Understand Why We Can’t Do This in the United States…Do You?

A few weeks ago, I was in London and after each meal the server would bring the bill. Every time I paid, the server swiped my credit card into this little cute machine and within 20 seconds the entire process was over. They didn’t have to walk away, they didn’t have to hand the bill and my credit card to another person and have it run…they did it themselves. The same exact thing happened a few month earlier in Toronto Canada. This process not only is quick and very efficient but it probably cuts down a little on credit card/identity theft. Let’s NOT debate that point today but rather the obvious point: Why can’t we do this in the Unites States? Oops, I’m sorry we sort of can: at Apple and Nordstrom Rack, which are cool, hip and efficient stores. Let me rephrase the question: Why can’t we pay for our meal in a restaurant at our table like they do in so many other parts of the world?

Please help me:

  • What am I missing?
  • Is this really hard to do?
  • Do restaurants not want to let their servers do this?
  • Have you eaten at a restaurant that actually does this?

I look forward to hearing from you.
