I am sure every one of us knows who Jake from State farm is and the cute Gecko on the Geico commercials. Both of them, in their own way, say they can save you money. Well last month I got my home insurance bill and I must say I was surprised at the amount. I spoke to a few friends and the next day reached out to a few referrals. All the companies were quick to not only get back to me but also lightening quick to give me a quote on my auto and home insurance together.
At the end of the day I switched from Allstate and went with Farmers Insurance. Yes, cost was an important part of the decision but the deciding factor was really the customer service I got from them over the other companies and saved over $2,410 annually!
Yes that number is correct. Interesting to mention that I have never filed a claim on my home/car insurance the ten years I was with Allstate and I was very surprised at how high they were.
So if you are looking to save a little money, I would suggest making a few phone calls for your auto and home insurance.
- Have you done this recently?
- How much did you save?
- How was the customer service?
- Any surprises during the process?
I look forward to reading your comments.

I switched from Liberty Mutual to Amica a few years ago. I don’t remember the exact savings, but it was significant.

Hi Merrill,
Yes, given my rental properties and auto etc. I’m constantly shopping for better rates. And for me, it’s ALL about the money. The customer service and ensuing billing are an important angle also, but the important part for me is am getting it at a reasonable price.
I also just picked up Farmers form my tenant property through an agent I’ve had a fabulous relationship with and saved over $2,500 annually on the premium. I was appalled that I paid the predecessor over $5,000 annually. I had them for almost 5 years and last year they doubled their premium after having no claims. So, out they went.
It’s a constant vigil to keep ahead of the game of them taking versus me giving.
Have a safe, joyous Memorial Day Holiday!

we did the same thing last year, switched from Travelers to Farmers for a significant decrease!!!! i believe we also bundled with life insurance which gave us even more of a discount. the more you bundle the more you save.
I wish the cable company felt the same way…

I wish there was a form you could fill out at your leisure and send to them electronically so that the phone call can take five minutes, not 15-20 minutes. It can be a good ROI on your time, especially if you haven’t shopped for insurance in five years or more, but some of the questions I have no idea what to answer (particularly regarding my rental property) and it would be good to have time to look up the answers.
