Are you growing old gracefully?

Wednesday, July 27th, 2016

I was reading an article regarding the habits of people who age gracefully and thought it was very interesting and something I would share. So I ask you, are you aging gracefully?

Time to take a break and see if you are aging gracefully!

I’m looking forwarding to reading your comments!

P.S. I scored an 11 and look forward to seeing what your score is….

I just figured it out…. I am really wealthy… thank you!

Monday, July 25th, 2016

As I get a little older I find myself reflecting a lot. I actually like doing this because it gives me a lot of clarity and allows me the opportunity to grow as a father, partner, son, brother, friend & business executive.

I think I have finally realized what life is about! Wow – perhaps a big statement that took me a long time to get too.

I truly believe it is about friends, family, and love!

I would suggest that if you have those three things, regardless of what you own or have in the bank, you are a very wealthy person.

My parents are very special people and have taught me so much, my sisters are different from each other but sweet, caring, and amazing. I am really excited to see how my kids mature & grow up – so far so good – each have an open heart and a willingness to learn…. At least some of the time. My friends – wow where do I start? When you have friends like Shu, Rep, Z, Sledge, Rooster, Woodman, and Scoop who stand behind you no matter what you feel like, you can accomplish anything! Thank you for being there and your guidance. Even though we have a pretty small family I am fortunate enough to have special people in that bucket as well Cuuuuz, Jessie, Uncle J (my second Father), and Vivian are all genuine, loving people. My partner Mary is beautiful inside & out and has so many positive qualities that I never thought was possible to possess in one person – thanks for all that you do!

With that said, I am very rich and I want to thank everyone in my life who continues to add to my wealth each and every day.

Make the Call!

Friday, July 22nd, 2016

Let me know if this sounds familiar:

  • You haven’t spoken to one of your closest friends in years?
  • You are mad at a sibling and haven’t spoken in six years!
  • You are curious what one of your childhood friends is doing?
  • You lost touch with one of your Aunts or Uncles?

Make the call!

Pick up the phone or send them an email and reach out.

The time is now. Life is way too short!

As all of us know, bad things are happening to people every single day. All of us know people who are young and have declining health.

Please make the call!

And if you do, I promise you will feel better and who knows you may even thank me later!

Thanks for considering to make the call!

I look forward to reading your comments.

Mentor – a word that has been used over and over this morning……

Wednesday, July 20th, 2016

I was sad to hear that Garry Marshall passed away. Even though I never met him, I have a lot to thank him for. Growing up watching Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, and many other shows he provided me so much enjoyment, laughter, and meaning. He was a genius and made it very easy to relate to his characters that he created.

Earlier I was reading the outpouring of comments from all the people that Garry Marshall helped, created, and touched over his 81 years. Lots of actors and actresses are saying a tremendous amount of nice things about him and many are calling him their mentor.

That is a great word and I thought today’s post would be about mentors… yours and mine. People who have influenced your life over the years. I am going to ask each of you to pause, think for a minute, and hopefully provide a list of your mentors.

Ok I will go first – in no particular order.

  • Joel & Polann Dubrow – parents
  • Sandy Schwartz – boss
  • John Boni – boss
  • Marianne Schafer – boss
  • John Klopstock – lifelong friend of my parents and second father
  • Mrs. Hartwell – 2 grade math teacher
  • Lauren Woods – father of my college roommate

I want to personally thank each of my mentors for helping me navigate thru life. Each of you have helped me in ways that I could never explain. Whatever I have become, each of you own a part of it.

Ok your turn:

  • Please list your mentors.

I look forward to reading your comments.

This App is a MUST HAVE!

Monday, July 18th, 2016

Last week I went on a family vacation out of the country. In total we had 12 people, including a number of kids. The day before the trip my sister (great job S.C.) said we needed to download this App right away. Basically the App allowed us to text for FREE while we were out of the country. We were easily able to create a group, not only exchange messages to see where everyone was at the resort but we were also able to exchange pictures & videos which AUTOMATICALLY load into your camera roll.

Here is the online description:

WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. WhatsApp Messenger is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and Nokia and yes, those phones can all message each other! Because WhatsApp Messenger uses the same internet data plan that you use for email and web browsing, there is no cost to message and stay in touch with your friends.

In addition to basic messaging WhatsApp users can create groups, send each other unlimited images, video, and audio media messages.

This was simply amazing, it allowed us to communicate so effectively and without question took some of the worrying away with regard to trying to figure out where everyone was, especially where the kids were at all times.

  • Have you ever heard or used this app?
  • What are your overall thoughts?

I look forward to reading your comments.

Attention sports fans – What is right with sports?

Friday, July 15th, 2016

Many of us are tired of reading about the negativity surrounding sports. Websites, chat rooms, airwaves, newspapers, and every outlet that you can think of are filled with conversation about:

  • Steroids
  • Drug use
  • Domestic violence
  • Cheating
  • Murder

Instead of focusing on all of those types of things today, let’s focus on what is great about sports. It could be a person, team, or anything else that you want to share.

Here are five things that I think are great about sports:

  1. Coach K – the ultimate professional. Amazing teacher, classy guy who does things the right way.
  2. NHL – As my good friend R.H. says (often) – name another league where an 8 seed can beat a one seed in any series.
  3. San Antonio Spurs – Might be the best franchise in sports. They seem to always do the right thing.
  4. Brad Stevens – Great young coach. Made the jump from college to the NBA look seamless.
  5. The Ivy league – There are no academic or athletic scholarships in the Ivy League – enough said!

Ok your turn.

Please stay positive.

  • What do you think of my list?
  • What do you think is right in sports?

I look forward to reading your comments.

Uber is great but doesn’t this lead to a bunch of problems?

Wednesday, July 13th, 2016

I am sure every one of the readers has heard of Uber and most likely, at this point, has used the service. I am not sure I know anyone who doesn’t have the App.

Without question, the service is great and works for so many reasons. Most people I know don’t like much about a cab experience and complain more often than not. For many, the car was small, dirty, and the drivers don’t always provide a nice & comfortable ride.

As we know Uber has exploded, everyone is using it, and the revenue is skyrocketing. No one will argue what I just said, but here is a different angle.

  • Did you ever stop and think about where the business is coming from?
  • Who does it directly effect?
  • How much are cab medallions worth now compared to a few years ago?

I must admit I am a little nervous.

Without question there will be fewer cabs, or at least the same number, but they will make a lot less.

I would suggest that the unemployment rate will go up because of the explosion of Uber, and the value of Cab medallions will be so negatively affected it will have a dramatic hit on business owners.

  • Am I wrong to look at it this way?
  • What am I missing?
  • Is that just how business works?

Please help me sort thru this.

I look forward to reading your comments.

Attention NBA fans….. in this free agent frenzy…. help…..who got better?….

Monday, July 11th, 2016

I must admit this off season in the NBA has been a huge surprise to me. I thought Kevin Durant would resign with OKC and D Wade would do the same thing with Miami and, of course, I was wrong. Derrick Rose gets traded to the Knicks, Dwight Howard who I thought would be a Dallas Maverick ends up in Atlanta, Al Horfod is now a Celtic, and two of the Golden State Warriors are now in Dallas.

Am I the only one having trouble figuring this out?

  • I think the NY Knicks and Boston Celtics are better!
  • Perhaps the only thing that beats the Golden State Warriors is injuries?
  • I think the Chicago Bulls are a mess with Rondo and Wade in the back court!
  • The Lakers made a lot of moves – are they any better? A playoff team?
  • With a healthy Chandler Parsons is Memphis a lot better?

At the end of the day who got better?

Please, please help me sort this out!

I look forward to reading your comments.

Coming to Texas? You need to go to Buc-ee’s!

Friday, July 8th, 2016

Over the years I have been hearing about something call Buc-ees but I really didn’t know much about it. Recently I have been asking some friends about it and they all say the same thing – it’s wonderful, we love it, it’s huge and cool! I know with that description I am not telling you much but it is kind of hard to describe. Picture a highway that off an exit ramp has a huge gas station (80+ pumps) and a massive retail store, maybe 1/3 of the size of a Walmart, that has some interesting and different food that it makes, has 75 bathrooms that are the cleanest you have ever seen, and customer service staff that is the friendliest you have ever met!

That is Buc-ees. Having now been to one it is pretty cool. The store is very well lite, off the charts clean, and they give away free samples of fudge and jerky. It’s an interesting concept and my understanding is all 32 of their stores are based in the great state of Texas!

So I say to you – please come to Texas and go to Buc-ees!

  • For those of you who have visited one, how was my description?
  • Do you have something in your state that sounds like a Buc–ees?

I look forward to reading your comments.
