The First 13 Minutes Were All Bad…Does it Really Have to Be that Way?!

Monday, March 2nd, 2015

A few weeks ago, I was watching a local newscast and noticed something that seemed a little odd to me! Story after story after story involved: murder, child abduction, fighting overseas, bad weather, airplane crash, terrorist threat and many other not-so-nice things! This went on for 13 minutes! Yes, 13 minutes of bad news! I will admit: I don’t usually watch the local news but couldn’t they fit in one feel good story about someone donating money to a charity to build a school? Or someone winning a special award? Or someone celebrating a 90th birthday or a 75th wedding anniversary?!

If I were producing a local newscast I would make sure that within the first 3 minutes there was at least one nice story! One story that would make people feel good!

What do you think?

  • Have you noticed this?
  • Does only bad news help ratings?
  • What would you do differently if you were producing the news?

I look forward to reading your comments.

What is your Cat’s Name? Is it Popular?

Friday, January 16th, 2015

A few weeks ago, I was reading an article online about the most popular cat names by state. Let me start by saying: I don’t have a cat and I am not really a huge cat fan…although I must admit, I have enjoyed being around a “Norman” in the past few years and my kids have named their cat “Louie”.

Check out this interesting infographic that shows the most popular cat names by state:

So, I ask you:

  • Are you a cat lover?
  • If you have a cat, what is it’s name?
  • Was there a particular reason you gave it that name?

Are High Fives a Thing of the Past?

Wednesday, January 7th, 2015

A few weeks ago, I was shopping at Market Street, a local grocery store that I really like. Of course, I couldn’t find an item that I was looking for and proceeded to ask a young gentleman who works there. He didn’t know where the item was but agreed to help me. After a few minutes of no luck with him, I thanked him and proceeded to look on my own. A few minutes later, I saw him again in the frozen food aisle; low and behold, he handed me the exact item I was looking for earlier! I gave him a huge thanks and tried to give him a high five! When I say “tried” I mean: I had my hand up and was in perfect position for the high five…but instead I got a very perplexed & confused look from him but no high five!

As I walked away I was now confused and asked myself:

  • Are high fives a thing of the past?
  • Was he too young (probably 19) to even know what a high five was?
  • Should I have chest bumped him?
  • Should I have fist bumped him?

Help! What should I have done?

Sorry Lawrence, You Didn’t Do the Right Thing…

    Monday, December 15th, 2014

A few weeks ago, I was at a Best Buy with my oldest son J.D. buying some mindless movies (for the record: they were for me, not for him) and as we approached the checkout counter I noticed another end cap that had some additional, not-so-stellar movie choices, which, of course is right up my alley. As Lawrence (the cashier) was ringing me up he said my total was $61 and I asked if I could add one more movie. He agreed and said that my new total was $85. I finished chatting with my son and told Lawrence that I didn’t believe the total was correct, Lawrence kind of looked at me with an odd look, so I told him that my reasoning was that my original total was $61 and I added a movie which made my new total was $85 but, I turned and pointed to the sign, which was directly behind me, showing Lawrence that the end cap price clearly said, “Blue Ray $14.99 and DVD $9.99”. Based on those calculations, I didn’t see how the total could be correct. Lawrence tried hard to fix it but ultimately had to call his manager who came over quickly and did whatever she did to override the system. As she was walking away, she asked Lawrence to take down the current price tag from that end cap. Lawrence took down the price tag, finished our transaction and we were on our way.

In the past month, I have been really teaching my son about business, strategy and lots of other things and this was another perfect example that I could drive a point home. As I was leaving the store, I asked my son what he thought about what just happened (I’m sure every reader is excited that they aren’t related to me and don’t have to endure all these stories). He wasn’t really sure what to say. So I mentioned a few things. If you want to be successful in business you need to pay attention to details and don’t just do your job, BUT also think about doing your job!

He understood the detail part very quickly. We reviewed what happened and how Lawrence did a nice job listening to the supervisor but didn’t really think about doing his job. The reason I say that is: He was told to take down the sign that was wrong…which he did. What was left said: “Blue Ray $24.99 and DVD $9.99”. That makes no sense. There is no chance that was right. Both signs, which were sitting next to each other, were wrong. What should have happened is Lawrence should have also checked or mentioned to the supervisor that the DVD price was wrong as well. If he had, he would have changed it as opposed to having another issue or charging the wrong price to a future customer.

    1. What do you think about what Lawrence did?
    2. Did Lawrence pay attention to the details?
    3. Should the supervisor have done something differently?
    4. What does it mean to think about doing your job rather than just doing your job?

I look forward to reading your comments and sharing them with my son!

Time to Get a Haircut…is Getting it Colored Next?

    Wednesday, October 29th, 2014

I get my hair cut about every three weeks and I always make fun of the amount of gray hair I have. Recently, the person who cuts my hair (thanks S.Y.) has been asking me if I’d like my hair colored and every time I say “No, definitely not, whatever is supposed to happen will happen.” However, I must admit that I’m coming off my answer a little bit and asked S.Y. what % of men over 40 color their hair and I was shocked to find out that the percentage is very high – over 50%! After I heard that, I started to ask around: Who does get their hair colored? While many of my friends won’t say they do it all the time they WILL and DID admit to having it done a few times.

I think gray hair looks distinguished on a guy…but maybe that’s the wrong way of looking at it!

    • Do you like gray hair on a man over 45?
    • What % of men over 40 do you think get their hair colored?
    • Okay…Here Goes! Should I get my hair colored?

    Hello, Lost & Found!

    Monday, October 6th, 2014

Okay, let me start by saying: I am getting older and with that (for me) I’m also getting a little bit more forgetful. Recently, I left a few things in my rental car and remembered later that night after dropping it off. The items were actually: a suit, shirt and a pair of socks. As luck would have it Enterprise found the stuff and couldn’t have been nicer about it. I actually picked it up the next day (the rental was in Dallas) so that problem was solved very easily.

This led me to think back about the other things that I have left behind, misplaced or frankly…lost. So, I ask you:

    • Are you getting a little more forgetful?
    • What was the last item that you lost but finally found?
    • What is the most expensive item you’ve ever lost permanently?

I look forward to reading your comments!
